The chamber presidents have long enjoyed wearing a jewel and collar during their term as the Newhaven Chamber of Commerce as an insignia of office. Worn during chamber events and ceremonial occasions when appearing in official capacity, it was decided that the past jewel and collar had reached the end of it’s useful life. it looked a little tired and didn’t really reflect the Chamber’s current, vibrant role in local and regional business and commerce.
It was decided that out was time to renew and update the jewel and collar, and who better to ask than expert jeweller, and current Chamber President, Mike Shorer. Mike explains the thinking and crafting of the new jewel and collar:
“As a Goldsmith I am constantly trying to better my craft and I’m never completely satisfied with my creations. However, sometimes it works.
Here is the new jewel and collar for the President of Newhaven Chamber of Commerce that I designed and made to reflect that we are a maritime town that trades with the world. Hence the anchor and compass, set with an old-cut diamond. The jewel has been hand carved and fabricated from brass, then 23 carat hard gold plated in yellow and rose gold colours. The background I hand engraved to look like waves and it has been guilloche enamelled in translucent blue. The lettering has been laser engraved and enamelled to symbolise the green of the Sussex Downs. The chain links I designed to symbolise the wooden planks of the older fishing boats in the harbour, tied together with rope.”
We look forward to seeing the jewel and collar sparkle in all it’s splendid glory at future events and occasions!
