The theme of the event this year was “Rule Britannia?” with all the crew dressed in it’s honour complete with a figurehead Britannia, the female personification of the British Isles, who has been a popular figure since the 1st century, when she was first depicted as a goddess!
HMS Elite was propelled by her motley crew – Gary Walsh, Paul Boswell, Mike Shorer, Jim Gilchrist, Norman Mayhew and Annie Lorys. Gary Walsh, from Elite Industries, kindly made the raft for the chamber of commerce. HMS Elite came in a hard earned joint nineteenth with the race winning raft from Newhaven’s UTC@harbourside – congratulations to them! A full list of the results, and the hilarious boat names, can be view at http://www.ouseday.com/news/raft-race-results-2017
Rafts were met at Newhaven by crowds lining the riverbanks and the swing bridge and a vibrant range of stalls along West Quay with toe tapping music provided by Earthquake drummers and Nicki Day.
