Come along to the Newhaven Chamber breakfast and meet Kate Chappell on Wednesday 4th December to out your questions to the parliamentary candidate for Labour.
Kate grew up in Plumpton and has recently returned to live in Lewes with her husband and three daughters.
Between finishing her studies and beginning to work in community development, she founded three successful social enterprises in a new field of recycling carpets. The first of these, Spruce Carpets in Glasgow, collected unwanted carpets in good condition and refurbished them with the help of homeless volunteers in order to supply them at low cost to people resettling from homelessness.
An Experienced Councillor
Most recently Kate was a Labour Councillor on the Executive at Manchester City Council for three years, and before that a backbench member for four years. On the Executive at Manchester City Council, she held the Environment portfolio which encompassed climate change, planning policy, licensing policy and highways. She was successful in introducing segregated cycle lanes on several key arterial routes, as well as leading an ambitious Climate Change Action Plan on behalf of the city.
As a Councillor, she was a champion for residents’ groups and the community groups within Rusholme ward, changing key pieces of city policy based on their demands. She successfully lobbied to introduce selective landlord licensing in an area of the ward blighted by poor quality private sector rentals. She regularly advocated for individual residents who came to her advice surgeries, making tangible improvements for them and their families.
Labour have our strongest ever manifesto and message this time round. Our Brexit policy is the only sensible way through the Brexit mess the Tories have left us in. From affordable homes and ending homelessness to increasing funding for the NHS, a Labour Government would create a green economy – improving all our lives whilst taking the pressure off the planet. – Kate Chappell 2019
